Landlords take advantage of customers: “The house is cleaned but there’s no bond back”

Landlords and property managers from NSW are saying that properties haven’t been properly cleaned as an excuse not to return the full bond, and thereby shafting millions from tenants.

A survey by UrbanYou showed that one in five NSW tenants were stolen about $1224 just like that.

There are 821,830 rental bonds lodged in the state, and the approximate losses these bonds total reach $191 million.

The owners who were the least likely to return rental bonds in full, are from Sydney CBD, Liverpool, Tamarama, Bondi and from the suburbs Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Parramatta, Westmead, Potts Point and Woolloomooloo.

Elke Keeley, co-founder of UrbanYou, said that many renters were being called out for missteps like tile mold or a stain on the carpet.

“We realised this was a growing problem among customers when it comes to end of lease,” Ms Keeley said.

“Sometimes customers leave it too late and don’t have time to clean properly, but more often than not, it is landlords looking for an excuse to hold onto some of the bond.”

“Some tenants were only getting their bonds returned in full after hiring professional cleaning companies at the end of their lease”, “Tenants could mitigate the risk of an unreturned bond by remembering to clean often overlooked parts of a home”, Ms Keeley said.

Parts like: oven and stove tops, walls, light switches and toilets.

UrbanYou also recommended thoroughly cleaning carpets, removing mould from bathroom tiles and surfaces and scouring cupboards and drawers

“In our experience, the majority of these things are quickly resolved and don’t warrant the hefty fines being passed down to consumers via rental bond disputes,” Ms Keeey said.
